D.R. Congo President sworn in for another term

Congo’s president has been sworn in for another term after an election contested by the country’s main opposition candidate.

President Joseph Kabila’s inauguration went ahead Tuesday after the country’s supreme court upheld his victory.

Opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi, who finished second in official results, has declared himself president and says he will hold his own inauguration later this week.

Observers fear unrest if Tshisekedi orders his supporters to take to the streets.

The November election was only the second democratic vote in Congo’s 51-year history, and international observers have expressed concerns about irregularities.

Congo, which is sub-Saharan Africa’s largest country, has suffered decades of dictatorship and civil war.
