World 100 metre champions Yohan Blake, of Jamaica, and Carmelita Jeter, of the USA, won their respective events at the inaugural Cayman Invitational meet.
Blake won the men’s 100m in 9.84, the second fastest time in the world this year, only behind training partner Usain Bolt’s 9.82.
“Just the other day I was telling Usain that I am going to come out here to show him something,” Blake said. “We are friends like that. So I just came out here tonight to execute my race properly. There are things to work on but the race was good overall.”
Fellow Jamaican Michael Frater was second in 10.05 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keston Bledman third in 10.06.
On the women’s side, Jeter, who struggled early to get into her rhythm, recovered to take the victory in the last five metres with a time of 11.04.
“I had a great field running with me,” Jeter said. “I had some world indoor medallists in there and they definitely gave me a run.”
America’s Jeneba Tarmoh was second in 11.13 and Muriel Ahoure of the Ivory Coast clocked a 11.14.
