Looking for Michael Sata’s successor as president of Zambia

Thursday, March 27, 2014

Oppositionists remain fragmented and lack public trust.  The strongest opposition party, the United Party for National Development (UPND), is organised along ethnic lines and is strongest in southern Zambia.  The former ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) is a shambles and looks highly unlikely to regain its lost glory.

Former President Rupiah Banda is working to reorganize the opposition with a focus on bringing the MMD closer to the UPND, but this appears to be a daunting task.  “PF is Sata and Sata is PF, so I don’t see the PF holding together with Kabimba at the helm,” says a University of Zambia political science professor who requested anonymity.  “But is there an opposition political party to benefit from the PF’s own goal? I don’t see that at the moment.”
