Jamaica dominates CARIFTA Games
Jamaica ended the 45th CARIFTA Games in St Georges, Grenada, in style as they had a clean sweep in the 4x400m to follow up on their sweep in the 4x100m on yesterday’s final day as the country ended with a record 86 medals.
This included 43 gold, 28 silver and 15 bronze medals.
Jamaica swept both Under-20 and Under-18 events, stamping their mark on the Caribbean’s premier youth track and field meet in an authoritative manner.
The Bahamas came in second, with a total of 34 medals – which included 6 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze – while Barbados occupied third place with 14 medals – 6 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze.
In the boys’ Under-20 4x100m final, the Jamaican quartet of Rohan Cole, 100m champion Nigel Ellis, Raheem Chambers and 400m champion Akeem Bloomfield, completed the race in 39.74 seconds.
Bahamas finished second in 40.27 seconds while Barbados third in 40.97 seconds.
The Under-20 girls’ Jamaica team of Kimone Hines, Patrice Moody, Shanice Reid and Rushelle Burton did not disappoint – combining for 44.30 seconds to beat the Bahamas (45.62 seconds) and Trinidad & Tobago (46.68 seconds).
Jamaica also dominated the Under-18 3000m finals with Keenan Lawrence winning the boys event in 9:05.71 seconds to beat Cayman Islands’ Dominic Dyer (9:06.33).
In the girls’ final, Jamaica won the first 2 spots with Britnie Dixon (10:16.90) and Monifa Green (10:17.00) taking top honors.
Britany Anderson of Jamaica won the Under-18 girls’ long jump title with a leap of 6.02 meters while another Jamaican, Shanice Love took the Under-20 discus throw with 52.09 meters. -(CMC)
