Afro-Latina, Epsy Campbell Barr seeking the Presidency of Costa Rica

Epsy Campbell Barr, an Afro-Latina has declared that she is seeking the Presidency of Costa Rican. If she wins the next presidential election slated for 2014, she will be the first Afro-Latina to serve as president of the country. Her bid differs from any other attempt from previous female candidates because she has the possibility to run as candidate of the top opposition party.

Ms. Barr is currently under consideration to run as candidate for the Citizen Action Party (PAC) in the 2014 election.

The A vote on who will be the PAC’s presidential candidate will take place on July 21. The winner will then take on other Presidential candidates on in February 2014. She is currently the most popular opposition candidate.

Her political career began in 1996, when she founded the Women’s Forum for Central American Integration of the Network of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin Women. She rose up the ranks to national prominence as Vice Presidential Candidate for the Partido Acción Ciudadana or the Citizen Action Party (PAC) in 2006.

Her opposition PAC party is seeking to unseat the National Liberation Party which has dominated Costa Rican politics since 1951.
