NAACP texting out the vote to re-engage infrequent voters

NAACP reaching out aggressively to infrequent voters; Democracy under threat in the United States
Friday, November 2, 2018

(Press Release) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the foremost civil rights organization in the United States, ramps up its civic engagement activities by recruiting its volunteer base in a massive peer-to-peer texting campaign. The organization aims to recruit 2,000 volunteers for the campaign.

Using the organizing tool, Hustle, volunteers will be texting voters across 6 target states – Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania – providing them with voting resources pertinent to their state.

The peer-to-peer campaign is part of an aggressive research-based civic engagement strategy by NAACP and GSSA, a Colorado data analytics group. NAACP is concentrating its efforts on increased voter registration and voter turnout in 2018. The campaign will set the stage for the next five years by ensuring equitable outcomes for all communities.

“An integral part of our Get Out the Vote campaign this year is to empower our base to tap into relational organizing,” said Jamal Watkins, NAACP Vice President of Civic Engagement. “At the start of our campaign, our power of five challenge asked people to spread our voting message to five people, and we’re providing them with a tool to reach far more people. This election is one of the most critical in recent times, and we want people to confidently head to polling stations, and we also want to empower them to send their peers to the polls as well.”

The Hustle campaign is an opportunity for voters to engage with real people, and have conversations about the importance of voting. Volunteers from all over the country can participate, and NAACP is awarding prizes to the top five volunteers who text the most people for each of the six states. Visit naacp.org/hustle to sign up.
