Bloomberg | Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa declined an offer by the ruling party to extend his term of office by two years until 2030.

The Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front had agreed to the resolution to extend his tenure on Saturday. The decision was reached by all of the party’s 10 provinces, which said they are pleased with the “progress” made in a short space of time by Mnangagwa, according to Patrick Chinamasa, the legal affairs secretary.

As recently as Tuesday, Mnangagwa had repeated his stance in private that he does not intend to stay longer in office, Chinamasa told delegates gathered at the second biggest city in Bulawayo.

“The president is a constitutionalist and was one of the architects of our current national constitution,” said Chinamasa. “He said he cannot be seen as violating the constitution.”
