White House L.A. forum touts wealth of opportunities for Black businesses

The engine of small business, which according to government statistics provides half of the nation’s private-sector jobs, was the focus of an Obama administration-sponsored urban economic forums held March 22 on the campus of Loyola Marymount University.
This forum followed similar gatherings held last month in New York City and in Birmingham, Alabama, and will be followed by events in Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Phoenix in the coming months.
African-Americans here are 50 percent more likely to go into business and the fastest-growing businesses in L.A. are women-owned businesses of color. We have the most significant port in the U.S., and our airport is number one or two when it comes to a destination airport. There are bigger airports, but that’s people passing through; they’re actually landing here and getting off.
