Voting Rights: The NAACP’s $20 Million Midterm Mobilization

The NAACP is launching a US$20 million get-out-the-vote drive for the 2026 midterms, its largest such effort, after the Supreme Court in April weakened the Voting Rights Act’s protections against racial gerrymandering.
The nonpartisan group aims to reach 6.5 million Black voters across 14 states and 33 congressional districts, using grassroots organizing, advertising, and 20,000 volunteers. The campaign targets areas where turnout has proved decisive.
Officials framed the push as a direct response to voting restrictions and policy changes affecting minority communities. NAACP President Derrick Johnson said the goal is to elect lawmakers who will resist President Trump’s agenda and advance healthcare, housing, and education reforms.
The announcement comes amid broader voter-mobilization efforts by other advocacy groups, setting up a costly and closely watched midterm cycle. Control of Congress and several governorships is at stake in November.
