Ushering in a new age of Black entrepreneurship

As we celebrate National Black Business Month this August, it’s an excellent time to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Black-owned businesses to both the Black community and the broader nation. This month-long observance, founded in 2004 by historian John William Templeton and engineer Frederick E. Jordan, highlights the significant economic and cultural impact of Black entrepreneurs.

While we honor this rich legacy, it’s equally important to look forward and recognize how Black entrepreneurship has evolved over time.

Pioneers like W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey advocated for Black economic empowerment and self-sufficiency by focusing on local businesses and community development. These strategies were crucial during times of segregation and limited economic opportunities.

To fully leverage these expanded opportunities, Black entrepreneurs need support to thrive in a technology-driven world. It’s essential to encourage a shift from a local to a global mindset and provide Black entrepreneurs with the skills and resources necessary to succeed in the digital era.
