University of the West Indies looking to actively reach out to Africa

Incoming principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, Professor Archibald McDonald, says if the institution is to remain viable, it will have to find new and creative ways to attract not just local students, but students from Africa.
McDonald said the university could not continue to focus on just the Caribbean region to fill the seats in the institution.
“There are wonderful opportunities in Africa. There are opportunities in South Africa and West Africa. But where the tremendous opportunities are, are in East Africa,” McDonald said.
He said Africa would be the fastest-growing continent in the next 10 years, and under his leadership, the University of the West Indies would be looking to set up offshore sites and recruit students from that part of the world.
“Those countries are not poor, so they can afford to send their students to the University of the West Indies for training,” the professor said.
