Friday, August 9, 2013

The trade dispute between Caribbean neighbors, Haiti and the Dominican Republic has escalated with the Dominican Republic implementing tighter restrictions along the border with Haiti, in an apparent reprisal for Haiti’s ban on various products from the Dominican Republic.

Industry leaders have been urging the political leadership in both countries to work expeditiously to resolve the dispute as it has began to impact negatively on business – especially in the wealthier Dominican Republic.

Authorities in Haiti reportedly closed the border crossing at Ouanaminthe, in retaliation for Dominican Republic impeding the entry of its citizens.

Haiti implemented ban on the products from the Dominican Republic in a bid to grow and protect its nacsent local industries.
