Tanzania has lifted its ban on agricultural imports from South Africa and Malawi, just days after imposing it in response to similar restrictions by the two countries.

The Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) announced late Friday that the ban was lifted with immediate effect to facilitate diplomatic discussions. TPHPA Director General Joseph Ndunguru stated that both South Africa and Malawi had reached out seeking to resolve the trade dispute through dialogue.

Earlier in the week, Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture had banned all agricultural imports from Malawi and South Africa and halted fertilizer exports to Malawi, which relies heavily on Tanzanian fertilizer. Both bans have now been reversed.

All three nations are members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).M.oSouth Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, welcomed Tanzania’s decision, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the most effective way to resolve conflicts and foster cooperation.

The dispute arose after Malawi banned imports of Tanzanian products such as maize flour, rice, ginger, and bananas, while South Africa halted banana imports from Tanzania.
