Tanzania will officially cease steel imports following significant growth in domestic production, marking a milestone in its industrialization agenda.

During a visit to steel manufacturer, Lodhia Industries, Minister for Planning and Investment Kitila Mkumbo hailed the expansion of Tanzania’s steel sector as a game-changer.

“Tanzania now has 19 major steel factories producing 1.2 million tonnes annually – double our domestic demand of 600,000 tonnes. We no longer need to rely on imports,” Mkumbo stated.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a favorable investment environment, calling the steel sector’s growth a testament to industrialization efforts.

Lodhia Industries CEO Manoj Gopi noted that the company’s US$100 million investment has driven economic growth, employing 2,370 workers and exporting steel to Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The expansion of local steel production has created thousands of jobs and secured Tanzania’s self-sufficiency in the sector. With a firm domestic supply, the government now prioritizes local consumption over exports.

“We have met our local needs and will focus on sustaining this progress,” Mkumbo affirmed.
