St. Lucia Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre has rejected calls for a snap general election, affirming that the timing of the polls will adhere to constitutional requirements.

The last general election, held on July 26, 2021, saw Pierre’s St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) secure a decisive victory, winning 13 of the 17 parliamentary seats, with two independent candidates subsequently aligning with the government. The remaining two seats were claimed by the opposition United Workers Party (UWP).

In recent weeks, the UWP has called for early elections, citing concerns over rising crime and socio-economic challenges. However, Pierre dismissed these demands, urging citizens not to be influenced by what he described as “power-hungry politicians” attempting to undermine the democratic process.

“There will be no elections in St. Lucia anytime soon,” Pierre stated. “Elections are called by the Prime Minister, and no one can dictate otherwise. This has never happened, and it will not happen now. Elections will be called in accordance with the Constitution.”

Pierre criticized attempts to create a narrative of crisis and instability in the country, emphasizing that such actions only hinder progress. He urged St. Lucians to disregard what he described as politically motivated distractions.

“This deliberate effort to fabricate chaos and crisis serves no purpose other than to stall the country’s development,” Pierre said. “I call on all St. Lucians to reject these divisive tactics.” -(CMC)
