South Sudan president Salva Kiir has said that the country will postpone the presidential elections scheduled for 2015 as the country’s conflicting factions will need time to reconcile, with a new poll possibly taking place as late as 2018.
Kiir and and former vice president turned rebel leader Riek Machar, signed a new ceasefire agreement in Ethiopia on Friday and said they would hold further talks about forming an interim government to end nearly 5 months of conflict.
That plan that was mediated by the African Union got off to a shaky start as both sides swiftly accused each other of violating the truce.
The conflict has driven thousands from their homes and negatively impacted the fledgling economy of the young nation.
