The South African government is set to initiate discussions with Formula 1 organizers about the potential return of the sport after a 30-year absence.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille announced on Friday in Cape Town that these talks are anticipated to occur before the end of the year, possibly in Abu Dhabi.

According to De Lille, the government is considering allocating a portion of the Tourism Ministry’s infrastructure budget to develop the necessary facilities for the event.

“This project would require cabinet approval,” she stated.

The last Formula 1 race in South Africa was held at the Kyalami racetrack, located north of Johannesburg, in 1993, just prior to the country’s first multiracial elections, which marked the end of decades of apartheid.

Currently, Africa is not represented in Formula 1’s 24-race calendar, with South Africa being the last nation on the continent to host a race.
