South Africa: Earthquake hits Johannesburg, 1 person reported killed

An earthquake shook buildings in Johannesburg and surrounding areas in South Africa’s most populous province – Gauteng on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring at least 17 at mining operations near the epicenter.

The magnitude-5.3 earthquake was centered in Orkney, 170 kilometers (105 miles) southwest of Johannesburg.

The area round Johannesburg and to its south is home to some of the deepest gold mines in the world.
