Shonda Rhimes honored by Directors Guild of America for promoting diversity

Shonda Rhimes (pictured), will be honored for providing jobs and other opportunities for women and minorities by the Directors Guild of America.

Rhimes is set to receive the 2014 Diversity Award for her commitment to diversity hiring and history of providing jobs and opportunities to women and minorities and the example she has set for the rest of the industry.

The Directors Guild of America announced Tuesday that the Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal producer will receive its 2014 Diversity Award. The prize will be the the fifth of its kind to be awarded in the organization’s 66-year history.

According to the Guild president Paris Barclay, in the decade that Rhimes has been creating and producing content, her record of diverse hiring has been consistently outstanding at a time when very few television series meets that standard. Rhimes said the she is honored to be recognized with such an honor and that it is extremely important to always create content that accurately reflects the reality of the world we all live in.

The 2014 Diversity Award ceremony will take place on January 25.
