Rwandans vote in presidential and general elections

Voter in Rwandan cast their ballots in presidential and general elections Friday in a contest that pits incumbent President Paul Kagame and his Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) party, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana.

Polls closed at 3 p.m. local time (10:00 EDT), and provisional results are expected later on Friday, said Charles Munyaneza, executive secretary of the Rwanda Electoral Commission.

The 59-year-old Kagame is projected to win the election. He remains popular for presiding over economic growth, and the country’s spectacular recovery –
after the 1994 genocide.

Rwanda has about 7 million registered voters. More than 44,000 Rwandans living outside the country voted Thursday.
