Republican Rep. John James of Michigan has officially entered the race for governor, he announced on Monday, joining a growing list of high-profile contenders vying for one of the most consequential elections in 2026.

In a message shared across his social media platforms, James took aim at what he described as the failures of Democratic leadership in the state, declaring that it’s time to steer Michigan “out of fantasyland and back to common sense.”

“Our state has suffered long enough,” James wrote. “Michigan is strong. Our people are strong. But we’re being held back by a lack of strong, competent leadership. It’s time for a change.”

With a potentially crowded Republican primary looming, James signaled early on that he intends to run as a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump. Michigan, a perennial swing state, narrowly backed Trump in both 2016 and 2024 after flipping blue for Joe Biden in 2020.

“President Trump and I have been in each other’s corner through thick and thin for eight years – and there’s no reason that partnership will end now,” James stated. “He’s doing his part to Make America Great Again, and I’ll do mine to bring prosperity and sanity back to Michigan.”

James first arrived in Washington after a hard-fought House victory in 2022, when he successfully claimed an open seat in a competitive district. His entry into Congress marked a turning point for Republicans, who had long sought to recruit the Army veteran and businessman after two unsuccessful Senate bids in previous election cycles.

If elected governor, James would make history as Michigan’s first Black governor – a milestone that could resonate deeply in a state with a rich tradition of political firsts.

The gubernatorial contest comes at a pivotal moment for Michigan, as Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is term-limited, prepares to leave office.
