Nikki Giovanni, renowned poet, author, educator, and public speaker, passed away at 81. Known for her candid and conversational style, she addressed topics like racism, love, and space travel throughout her career. Giovanni, the subject of the 2023 documentary Going to Mars, died Monday with her partner, Virginia “Ginney” Fowler, by her side.

Over her career, Giovanni published over 25 books, including Black Judgement and Black Feeling Black Talk, which earned her appearances on shows like The Tonight Show and sold thousands of copies. She became a prominent figure through her poetry, prose, and public speaking, advocating for Black empowerment, addressing personal struggles, and celebrating Black culture.

Giovanni was influential in the literary world, editing the Night Comes Softly anthology and founding a publishing cooperative. She was widely respected by figures such as James Baldwin and Oprah Winfrey and received numerous accolades, including a National Book Award nomination and a Grammy nomination.

A trailblazer in both her art and activism, Giovanni was a passionate voice for change. Her work remains a testament to her resilience and commitment to social justice.
