Environmental damage in Nigeria
A village in Nigeria’s oil-rich southern delta has sued Royal Dutch Shell PLC in a U.S. federal court for US$1 billion over longtime environmental damage brought by oil production.
The suit on behalf of the village of Ogale in Nigeria’s Rivers state has been filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. The lawsuit alleges Shell of “willful” negligence in its 50 years of oil production through a local subsidiary in the endemically poor region.
