Buhari had pledged to sell off the jets as part of his campaign promise to reduce on waste

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is selling 2 presidential jets in line with a campaign promise to reduce unnecessary luxuries and waste.

Buhari was elected president last year on a commitment to crack down on the country’s systemic corruption, and a spokesman said that the sale of the presidential jets had been among his campaign pledges.

While the anti-corruption drive has been widely praised, the fall in oil prices globally, has seen the Nigerian economy go into recession for the first time in more than 20 years.

The country’s media is advertising the sale of the 2 aircraft, a Dassault Falcon 7x executive jet and a Beechcraft Hawker 4000 business jet.
According to presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, the newspaper advertisements for the sale of 2 presidential planes had been authorized by the presidency. They will run as auctions, in a bid to maximize the money from the sale.
