Nigeria: Muhammadu Buhari re-elected as president

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been declared the winner of the presidential election.

Buhari won easily, by nearly 4 million votes, despite widespread criticism that he had not delivered enough on his promises to fight corruption and insecurity and strengthen the economy.

Top opposition challenger Atiku Abubakar had made sweeping pledges to lift millions of people out of poverty, but in the end many Nigerians were wary of past corruption allegations and his proposal to privatize the state oil company in Africa’s largest producer of crude.

The election was postponed for a week at the last minute, and voting was marked by hours-long delays that observers said kept some people away from the polls.

Buhari said on Wednesday, he would continue to engage all parties and keep his government inclusive after being elected for a 2nd 4-year term.

“Our government will remain inclusive and our doors will remain open,” he said while collecting a certificate from the electoral commission following the poll win, announced early on Wednesday.
