Nigeria delegation visits Zimbabwe to learn agricultural best practices

Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Shaib Kyari, led a delegation to Zimbabwe to study its successful agricultural strategies, particularly those driving record-breaking wheat harvests over the past three years.
President Mnangagwa hosted Minister Kyari at State House in Harare, where they discussed enhancing food security through mutual cooperation. The focus was on Zimbabwe’s economic turnaround through agricultural mechanisation.
Kyari expressed Nigeria’s interest in adopting mechanisation to boost productivity and attract young people to farming. He highlighted the need for innovative practices to support Nigeria’s growing population and emphasized Nigeria’s strengths in rice production as a potential area for shared learning.
Following his meeting with President Mnangagwa, Kyari met with Zimbabwe’s Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Anxious Masuka, to explore deeper collaboration.
Masuka lauded Zimbabwe’s transformative agricultural achievements, noting the dual benefits of food security and economic growth. He pointed to Zimbabwe’s self-sufficiency in wheat production – making it one of only two African nations to achieve this – and hinted at Nigeria as a potential market for surplus wheat.
The visit underscores Zimbabwe’s growing influence in African agricultural innovation and cooperation.
