New CARICOM head to start work mid-August
The man chosen to replace Sir Edwin Carrington as CARICOM Secretary General will begin his work next week.
New Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque (pictured), will assume duties a week from now, the grouping’s chairman Dr. Denzil Douglas has announced.
Dr. Douglas said Ambassador LaRocque takes office next Monday “with the full confidence and support of the Conference of Heads of Government and the best wishes of the entire Community”.
The Dominican was chosen by CARICOM heads on July 21, seven months after his predecessor Sir Edwin Carrington stepped down.
Ambassador LaRocque, 56, is CARICOM’s seventh Secretary General.
He has served as the grouping’s Assistant Secretary-General for Trade and Economic Integration since September 2005.
Prior to his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General, Ambassador LaRocque served as Permanent Secretary in various Ministries in Dominica for more than 14 years, including in the Ministries of Trade, Industry, Enterprise Development, Tourism, and Foreign Affairs, where he headed the diplomatic service. He also served as the principal advisor to the Government of Dominica on all matters pertaining to economic integration and regional and international trade.
He has a wealth of experience in management, public administration, economic development, trade, foreign affairs and diplomacy.
