Richard and Mengistu Koilor achieved a significant milestone in Philadelphia’s brewing scene by opening Two Locals Brewery on January 31, making it the city’s first Black-owned brewery. The venture represents years of dedication and passion for the brothers, who began their brewing journey as home brewers in 2016.

Since their humble beginnings, the Koilor brothers have steadily expanded their operation, initially renting space and collaborating with other breweries across Philadelphia. Now, with the launch of Two Locals Brewery, they have their own dedicated space equipped with a 15-barrel system, providing them with the capacity to broaden their beer selection.

At Two Locals Brewery, patrons can enjoy a variety of unique flavors crafted by the Koilor brothers. Their offerings include Nubian, a rich brown ale, paying homage to their heritage, and Lofa Lager, named after their father’s birthplace. Additionally, they showcase “If These Walls Could Talk,” a hazy IPA developed in collaboration with Wissahickon Brewing.

The establishment of Two Locals Brewery not only marks a significant achievement for Richard and Mengistu Koilor but also represents a celebration of diversity and innovation within Philadelphia’s brewing community. As they continue to grow and refine their craft, the Koilor brothers are poised to make a lasting impact on the local beer scene while inspiring aspiring brewers from all backgrounds.
