Lorna M. Mahlock set to become 1st African American woman to serve as General in US Marines

Friday, April 13, 2018

U.S. Marine Corps, Col. Lorna M. Mahlock was earlier this week nominated for promotion to general.

If nominated, Mahlock will be the first African American woman to serve as brigadier general in the Marine Corps.
Currently, she is serving as the deputy director of operations, plans, policies and operations directorate at the Marine Corps’ headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The Marine Corps, has the fewest female service members. Women make up just 8 percent of the service.
It has a historically poor track record in attracting African American and female applicants to its ranks, and in 2012 launched a campaign to increase its diversity.

Last year, the Marine Corps made history by welcoming its first female infantry officer, and it was only 3 years ago when the Pentagon historically made all combat jobs available to women.
