Thursday, August 1, 2024

On Wednesday, the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, met with President Joseph Boakai of Liberia. During his visit, the Secretary-General provided an update on the implementation of the AfCFTA.

The AfCFTA has evolved from the establishment of a legal framework to its operational phase, with economic operators now actively utilizing it.

President Boakai affirmed Liberia’s strong support for the continent’s economic integration through the AfCFTA. He announced that Liberia had completed its internal ratification process for the AfCFTA Agreement. Upon depositing the ratification instrument with the AU Commission in Addis Ababa, Liberia will officially become the 48th State Party to the Agreement.

The AfCFTA is a key initiative under the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a strategic framework aimed at achieving inclusive and sustainable development across Africa over the next 50 years.

The AfCFTA seeks to enhance intra-African trade by establishing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade agreement among member states, covering trade in goods and services, investment, intellectual property rights, and competition policy.
