The Dominica government has expressed its support for the Antigua & Barbuda-based regional airline, LIAT 2020, which has included Dominica among its new routes. The airline’s inaugural flight to Douglas Charles Airport, located in the northern part of the island, took place on Thursday.

Public Works and Public Utilities Minister Fidel Grant commented, “LIAT 2020 represents a new chapter in Caribbean aviation, one that aims to enhance regional integration, stimulate economic activity, and provide a crucial link for travelers among our beautiful Caribbean islands.”

He added, “The return of LIAT is not merely a business venture but a symbol of our collective commitment to growth and prosperity in Caribbean tourism. This airline will connect our people, facilitate the movement of goods, and showcase the unparalleled beauty and diversity of our region to the world.” Grant also praised the airline’s stakeholders for their efforts in reviving the airline, expressing confidence that LIAT 2020 would achieve new heights by connecting Caribbean islands with efficiency, reliability, and a distinctive Caribbean flair.

Earlier in the month, the newly established LIAT 2020 made its first flight to St. Lucia, signaling the return of the inter-regional airline after LIAT (1974) Ltd went bankrupt in January of this year. The previous company had been under administration since July 24, 2020. The new entity has been formed in collaboration with Air Peace, a private Nigerian airline founded in 2013.

Antigua & Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne revealed that Air Peace is investing nearly US$65 million in the venture, while the Antigua & Barbuda government is contributing US$20 million. This partnership is expected to provide the new airline with at least seven aircraft to service its routes.

Benoit Bardouille, the chief executive officer of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority, announced that LIAT 2020 will operate four flights to and from Dominica each week. Additionally, the airline’s director of operations, Arthur Senhouse, expressed his hope that the Caribbean region would welcome the new airline.

Senhouse stated, “It is the hope and dream of our prime minister as he encourages his other Caribbean counterparts to support the vision of ensuring LIAT 2020 fulfills its purpose of fostering economic and social activity, growth, prosperity, employment, and connectivity throughout our Caribbean region.” He emphasized that this mission is rooted in a culture of safety, which he described as “our first and most precious possession.”

He also highlighted the aspiration for future generations to grow up in a region where they can realize their dreams and participate in the airline industry at various levels.

Marva Williams, the chief executive officer of Discover Dominica Authority and Tourism Director, remarked that the arrival of LIAT 2020 in Dominica marks “a new chapter in air travel for our beloved Dominica.” She noted, “This new route serves as a vital link, enhancing our regional connections and creating numerous opportunities for tourism and trade.” Williams also pointed out that tourism, a key component of Dominica’s economy, is expected to thrive with increased access and visibility.

The inaugural flight to Dominica coincided with LIAT 2020’s expansion to St. Kitts & Nevis and Grenada. The airline, which already operates scheduled flights to Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, and Barbados, is offering competitive fares to make air travel more accessible. Passengers can now travel between any of these destinations at least three days a week for a base fare of US$99, excluding taxes. -(CMC)
