The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya has indicated that it will release the final list of eligible voters on Monday February 18, ahead of the March 4 presidential and general elections.
An official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Mr. Yusuf Nzibo revealed that the commission has been working with all political parties as part of an effort to organize a peaceful and a credible vote. The electoral commission has detected about 20,000 people who were registered twice during the month-long registration period that came to a close last December 18th. The commission is in the process of correcting this anomaly will be corrected with the use of biometric identification machines.
Biometric machines match fingerprints, facial images or eye scans as part of the identification verification process during elections.
All voters will be given two weeks to cross check their information on the voters list to be used for the presidential and general elections, after which the final voter’s roll will be made made available to the political parties and accessible to the public on the IEBC website.
Nzibo, further said that the electoral commission had observed the use of biometric machines during the recent Ghanaian election, and is in the process of testing a backup identification method should the machines malfunction.
The Kenyan electoral commission intends to implement electronic voting in future elections.
