Kenya elections: Uhuru Kenyatta opens early lead in presidential race

Monday, March 4, 2013
Vote counting is currently under way in Kenya’s general election, an impressive turnout kept some polling stations open beyond the official time – past the 18:00 local time (10:00 EST) deadline.
It is estimated that approximately 70 percent of all registered voters turned out to vote for the new President, governors, and senators.
It is now apparently clear that the presidential race is between front runners Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
Provisional results indicate that Mr. Kenyatta is slightly ahead of Mr. Odinga, with Kenyatta having garnered 1,496,137 votes which translates to 55.15 percent of the votes counted while Odinga has garnered 1,093,175 votes which translates to 40.28 percent of the votes counted.
