Fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame a slow start Sunday to beat Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and reach the second round of the French Open.
Tsonga is the highest-seeded player in action on the opening day of the tournament. He is trying to become the first Frenchman since Yannick Noah in 1983 to win the French Open. His best result at Roland Garros was reaching the fourth round in 2009 and 2010.
He reached the 2008 Australian Open final but lost to Novak Djokovic.
