Jermaine Whirl Makes History as the Youngest HBCU President at 39

In a landmark appointment, Dr. Jermaine Whirl has been named the 15th president of Savannah State University (SSU), becoming the youngest individual to lead a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) at just 39 years old. With a dynamic background in higher education leadership across Georgia and South Carolina, Whirl brings a bold, transformative vision to SSU and the broader community.
Before taking the helm at Savannah State, Whirl served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), where his tenure was marked by significant achievements. He oversaw a surge in student enrollment and established strategic partnerships with major organizations, including Amazon, Piedmont Augusta, and Augusta University.
His career spans impactful roles at Georgia Southern University, East Georgia State University, Savannah Technical College, and Greenville Technical College – underscoring his deep commitment to education and community advancement.
“I’m thrilled to return to the vibrant city of Savannah and help shape the next generation of leaders,” Whirl said. “Through collaboration with alumni, faculty, and community partners, I believe we can elevate SSU to unprecedented heights and create lasting opportunities for Tiger Nation.”
Whirl’s aspirations for SSU are both ambitious and inspiring. He plans to expand academic programs, amplify the university’s impact in the community, and position SSU as Georgia’s largest HBCU.
Key initiatives include launching doctoral programs and establishing SSU as a driver of economic development in Savannah. By 2035, he envisions SSU ranked among the top 25 HBCUs in the United States – a bold goal rooted in his dedication to excellence and innovation.
His leadership has earned widespread recognition. Whirl is a recipient of the Greater Augusta Black Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Award and has been inducted into the Georgia Titan 100 Hall of Fame.
He was also named a Notable Georgian and one of the state’s top young leaders by Georgia Trend.
Dr. Whirl holds degrees in economics, organizational leadership, business, and education from respected institutions including Winthrop University, Valdosta State University, Armstrong State University (now part of Georgia Southern), and Charleston Southern University. This diverse academic foundation provides him with the insight and skills to drive impactful change.
