Jamaica’s junior security minister resigns

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Jamaica’s State Minister for National Security, Dr. St. Aubyn Bartlett (pictured), has resigned from the post with immediate effect.

Bartlett has been under pressure recently from some of his inner-city constituents who lashed out against his style as a political representative and swore not to vote if the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) retained him on the election ticket.

On Wednesday, Minister in charge of Information and the Public Service, Arthur Williams told journalists at the weekly Post Cabinet press briefing that Bartlett submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

In recent weeks, Bartlett raised eyebrows when he was entangled in a verbal spat with South West St Catherine Member of Parliament, Everald Warmington over whether the title of “The Most Honourable” is to be attached to Prime Minister Holness.

Bartlett has been quoted as saying that he resigned due to personal matters.

In the 2007 General Election he defeated the People’s National Party (PNP’s) Professor Trevor Munroe. (CMC)
