Jamaica’s Finance Minister, Nigel Clarke, announced that he will resign as Member of Parliament for St. Andrew North Western, officially ending his term as finance minister at midnight on Tuesday. Clarke shared the news during a farewell speech at a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) rally in his constituency.

“I leave the playing field effective midnight tomorrow night,” he stated, thanking Prime Minister Andrew Holness for entrusting him with the finance portfolio.

The government confirmed in August that Clarke would be stepping down to join the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as one of its four deputy managing directors, starting on October 31.

Prime Minister Holness has named successors for both of Clarke’s roles. Local councilor Duane Smith will assume Clarke’s position as the JLP representative for St. Andrew North Western.

Clarke entered politics in 2016 when Prime Minister Holness appointed him as Jamaica’s Ambassador-at-Large for Economic Affairs. He previously served as a Senator from 2013 to 2015. Elected as Member of Parliament for North West St. Andrew in 2018, he was shortly after appointed as Minister of Finance.

During his tenure, Clarke prioritized macroeconomic stability and crisis management, notably reducing Jamaica’s debt-to-GDP ratio from 110 percent in 2020 to 72 percent by 2023.

Prime Minister Holness commended Clarke’s contributions, saying, “Nigel provided a critical skill in managing technical change. I don’t think there is anyone in Jamaica who could question Nigel Clarke’s competence in overseeing economic affairs and transforming Jamaica’s economic prospects.”

Holness also noted that having a JLP member invited to a prominent international role is a “distinct honor.”
