Jamaican Scientist Simone Badal Advances Prostate Cancer Research at UWI Mona
Pioneering prostate cancer research by Jamaican scientist Dr. Simone Badal will be highlighted at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Research Day on Thursday.
Badal developed the first Caribbean prostate cancer cell line (ACRJ-PC28), advancing treatments for diverse populations. Her work, backed by over US$1 million in funding from the NIH, Pfizer, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, positions Jamaica at the forefront of global cancer research and personalized medicine.
Committed to Caribbean-led scientific progress, she mentors young researchers and leads Anticancer Research Jamaica (ACRJ), fostering innovation in oncology.
“With cancer a leading cause of death in Jamaica and the Caribbean, her work is more than a scientific milestone – it is a beacon of hope,” UWI stated.
Research Day attendees will explore interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and discussions on key regional and global challenges. The event is open to all.
