Jamaica Sets December 15 for Tourism Reopening After Hurricane

Jamaican officials have announced a targeted December 15, 2025, reopening for tourism, asserting a swift recovery from October’s Category 5 Hurricane Melissa. The storm caused significant damage in western parishes but left the majority of the island-nation’s tourism infrastructure intact.
“The resolve of our workers shaped this timeline,” stated Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett at a diaspora briefing in South Florida. He acknowledged initial travel advisories but predicted a swift downgrade as recovery progresses, citing World Bank assessments of an unusually rapid rebound.
Key assessments indicate:
- Airports in Montego Bay and Kingston are fully operational.
- Major hotel brands, including Sandals and RIU, have resumed operations or announced early December reopenings.
- Primary tourist areas outside the western region, like Ocho Rios, reported minimal disruption.
- A $6.7 billion multilateral support package is secured for broader national reconstruction.
The government has activated the Tourism Enhancement Fund to aid displaced industry workers. Despite Melissa’s severity, the ministry projects a stabilized winter season, with source markets already rebooking travel.
Minister Bartlett emphasized the reopening as a critical step to restore livelihoods and signal Jamaica’s resilience, with a continued focus on safety and restoring traveler confidence for the peak season.
