Marva McDonald Bishop was officially sworn in as Jamaica’s new President of the Court of Appeal on Thursday, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold this prestigious position.

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen at King’s House. During the ceremony, McDonald Bishop was also honored with the Order of Jamaica (OJ). She succeeds Justice Patrick Brooks, who recently retired.

In his remarks, the Governor-General emphasized the significance of the event for the nation’s judiciary. “The judiciary is the cornerstone of our democracy, ensuring the fair and just application of our laws. Through the diligent work of our courts, the rights of our citizens are protected, and the principles of our constitution are upheld,” he said. He further praised the dedication and high ideals exemplified by the judiciary, commending Justice McDonald Bishop for her exceptional commitment to these values.

“Throughout her distinguished career, she has demonstrated exemplary judicial excellence, integrity, and impartiality. Her profound legal acumen and unwavering dedication to justice have earned her the respect and admiration of her peers, the legal community, and the public,” he added.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness also addressed the gathering, noting the historic nature of the occasion for Jamaica’s judiciary. He highlighted Justice McDonald Bishop’s remarkable career journey from a prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to her roles in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, to which she was appointed in 2014.

“Justice McDonald Bishop, I am confident that under your leadership, the Court of Appeal will continue to uphold the highest standards of judicial excellence,” Holness said, while also expressing gratitude to Justice Brooks for his distinguished service.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the necessary resources to ensure an effective and functional judicial system for all Jamaicans. “We recognize the vital role that a robust and efficient judiciary plays in the development and stability of our nation,” he stated.

Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding, congratulated Justice McDonald Bishop and acknowledged her reputation for erudition, as evidenced in her judgments. “I want to congratulate you heartily on this momentous occasion,” he said.

In her response, Justice McDonald Bishop underscored the importance of visionary leadership and clear direction. She also emphasized the need for collaboration, effective communication with stakeholders, and building strong relationships with other branches of Government and the legal community.
