Jamaica: More election talk as JLP prepares to field more women candidates

Monday, November 7, 2011
With the likelihood a general election being held in the near future, Prime Minister Andrew Holness (pictured), – who is also the political head of the ruling Jamaica Labor Party (JLP), has revealed that his party intends to field a record number of women candidates.
The disclosure by Holness was made as he announced Joan Gordon Webley as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the East Rural St. Andrew constituency, an area she represented in the 1980s. Ms. Webley has indicated that she will be stepping down as head of the National Solid Waste Management Authority.
The JLP continues to enjoy a resurgence in their poll numbers ever since Mr. Holness took over the job of Prime Minister from Bruce Golding who resigned last month.
