Jamaica imposes restrictions on poultry products from North America

Friday, March 20, 2015

The Simpson-Miller administration in Jamaica announced Thursday immediate restrictions on imports of poultry and poultry by-products from various regions in the United States and Canada recently affected by outbreaks of avian influenza.

The measure applies to products from the U.S. states of Arkansas, California, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon and Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia, Jamaica’s Agriculture Ministry said in a statement.

Jamaica’s poultry farmers were advised to avoid contact between their poultry and wild birds.

“They should ensure that wild birds, including pigeons, cannot enter the poultry houses and the feed and water must be protected from contamination by these wild birds,” the ministry said.

Jamaica has been free of avian flu so far.
