Jamaica: Digicel shuts down Claro

Scores of Jamaicans will be left holding expensive cellular phones fit only for the scrap dump this morning after Digicel shuts down the Claro network at the start of the day.

Several of these phones cannot work on either the Digicel or Landline Internet Mobile and Entertainment (LIME) networks and will be nothing more than painful reminders of a time when Jamaica had three major entities offering cellular telephone services.

Claro had more than 500,000 subscribers when it sold its business to Digicel, but there is no official count on the number of instruments held by these subscribers.

However, a former Claro dealer, who has asked not to be named, is adamant that scores of Jamaicans will be burnt by today’s shutdown of the network.
