Namibia’s newly elected President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has made history with her groundbreaking cabinet appointments, further solidifying her commitment to gender equality and national progress.

On Saturday, Nandi-Ndaitwah appointed Lucia Witbooi as the nation’s first-ever female Vice President and Ericah Shafudah as Finance Minister. This move places Namibia at the forefront of gender balance in governance, making it the only African country with both a female president and vice president.

Streamlining Government for Efficiency

In an effort to streamline operations and promote efficiency, Nandi-Ndaitwah reduced the cabinet to 14 ministers, with eight of them being women, and seven deputy ministers. By merging certain offices and transferring responsibilities, she successfully cut down the number of ministers from 21 and deputies from 21.

The president emphasized that this restructuring is designed to eliminate redundancies, reduce government expenditure, and ensure the effective execution of development programs. As part of the new cabinet setup, the management of emerging industries like oil and gas will now fall under the president’s office.

At 72, Nandi-Ndaitwah has vowed to boost investments in the agricultural sector and diversify Namibia’s resource-based economy. She also aims to tackle the country’s high unemployment rate, offering fresh opportunities for growth.

With this cabinet, Nandi-Ndaitwah has not only empowered women in leadership positions but also taken bold steps towards a more inclusive and effective government.
