Hubert Minnis sworn in as Prime Minister of the Bahamas

Hubert Minnis, was sworn in Thursday as prime minister of the Bahamas, following his Free National Movement (FNM) party’s landslide victory in the general election held on May 10.

Minnis, in his first speech as Prime Minister paid tribute to the electoral system saying “our democracy is the envy of many countries around the world.” Adding that “today represents a new day for the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.”

The FNM was able to pull off a stunning defeat of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), securing 34 out of 39 ridings.

Meanwhile, a call has been made for former Prime Minister Perry Christie to resign as leader of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).
Christie lost his seat.

The general election was overseen by international and regional observers including the Organization of American States (OAS) and the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) regional grouping. -(CMC)
