Hakeem Jeffries reelected as House Democratic leader

House Leader Hakeem Jeffries was reelected as Democratic leader Tuesday, along with Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, in a closed-door vote. Despite Democrats failing to reclaim the House majority in November, Jeffries pledged to seek bipartisan solutions while resisting far-right extremism.
Jeffries remains Congress’s highest-ranking Black official but fell short of becoming Speaker, with Republicans retaining control under Mike Johnson. Democrats gained some seats in New York and California but saw minimal overall change in the House.
Jeffries dismissed GOP claims of a sweeping mandate, noting the slim Republican majority. He emphasized Democrats’ potential influence in passing legislation if Republicans struggle to govern. Other leadership roles were filled, including Rep. Joe Neguse as Assistant Democratic Leader and Rep. Debbie Dingell as DPCC Chair.
