Guyana Sets Key Election Dates as 2025 Polls Approach

Monday, June 2, 2025

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has officially set July 14, 2025, as nomination day for the country’s upcoming general and regional elections, which are scheduled to take place on September 1, 2025.

This announcement follows the formal approval of GECOM’s comprehensive work plan by its seven-member commission on Thursday. The plan outlines critical timelines and procedures aimed at ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.

In a press release issued Friday, GECOM stated that political parties wishing to participate in the elections must submit their official lists of candidates on July 14, 2025, in accordance with statutory requirements.

Parties are also required to apply for the allocation of election symbols by June 22, allowing time for review and final approval by the commission ahead of the polls.

GECOM emphasized its commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections, noting that its Secretariat has received full authorization to implement the tasks outlined in the approved work plan.

In addition, the commission announced that all necessary statutory forms for candidate nominations are now available on its official website, enabling parties to begin preparing their submissions in advance.

While the government had previously announced the election date of September 1 during a statement on May 25, President Irfaan Ali has yet to formally dissolve Parliament.
