Grenada elections: Opposition New National Party of Keith Mitchell secures landslide victory

Grenada Prime Minister-Designate Dr. Keith Mitchell
The opposition New National Party of Dr. Keith Mitchell has won Grenada’s national and general elections in a landslide.
Preliminary results indicate that the New National Party (NNP) is on the verge of repeating the results of the 1999 general election when it won all 15 seats in parliament.
Outgoing Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, who is leading the National Democratic Congress, is facing an uphill struggle to win his St. Patrick East riding against relative newcomer Clifton Paul of the New National Party.
The National Democratic Congress loss follows a tumultuous 2012 that saw the resignation of a number of Cabinet members from outgoing prime minister Tillman Thomas’ government.
Mitchell becomes Grenada’s prime minister – a position he last held when he led the country from 1995 to 2008.
