Grenada elections 2013 update: Prime Minister Thomas facing prospect of defeat

Saturday, February 16, 2013

Latest polls suggest that Keith Mitchell and his opposition New National Party will win the coming general elections. The odds are stacked against the incumbent Prime Minister Tillman Thomas due in part to his falling out and eventual resignations of key allies – former cabinet ministers Karl Hood, Michael Church and Peter David, as well a major disagreements with members of his National Democratic Congress party.

The Thomas administration has been rattled with too much infighting and accusations of corruption among some of the cabinet. Thomas eventually prorogued the parliament through Governor General Sir Carlyle Glean in September 2012 in order to avoid a no-confidence vote against his leadership.

The polls also suggest that there is a strong possibility of Thomas losing in his St. Patrick’s East riding – a seat he won in 2008 with a margin of 104 votes.

Both the National Democratic Congress and New National Party launched their election manifestos this week.
