Ghana’s Poverty Rate Declines for Third Straight Quarter

Thursday, January 22, 2026
Ghana’s Multidimensional Poverty Index has fallen for a third consecutive quarter, the national statistics office reported Wednesday.
The rate dropped from 23.9 percent in the first quarter of 2025 to 21.9 percent by the third quarter, lifting nearly one million Ghanaians out of poverty over the past year.
The index tracks deprivation across health, education, employment, and living standards, including access to clean water and sanitation.
The government statistician credited improved living conditions for the decline but cautioned that fundamental drivers of poverty remain unaddressed. Households headed by individuals with no formal education are the most affected, and vulnerable groups continue to shoulder a disproportionate burden.
